Local Taliban leader among 5 arrested in Western Afghanistan

KABUL, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Afghan security forces on Thursday launched a military operation arresting a local Taliban leader along with four of his colleagues in the western Farah province, Afghan Ministry of Interior Affairs confirmed Friday.

The joint operation was launched by national police and personnel of the national directorate of security late on Thursday in Charbagh, an area close to the provincial capital Farah city, where a Taliban leader who was in-charge of leading guerrilla fighters in Farah and four of his subordinates were arrested, the ministry said in a statement.

The arrested Taliban leader had served as the shadow district chief of Khak-e-Safaid district of Farah in the past, the statement added.

An amount of heavy and light arms and ammunition have also been seized during the skirmish, according to the statement.

The Taliban militant group hasn't made a comment on the report yet.
