OTTAWA, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Canada saw 27,700 new jobs in May and its unemployment rate fell to 5.4 percent, the lowest since 1976, according to Statistics Canada on Friday.

The increase came after a record 106,500 jobs were added in April. This was driven by a rise of 61,500 in the number of self-employed workers while the number of employees fell by 33,800 -- a drop in 13,100 public sector employees and 20,700 private sector employees.

The job surge was made up entirely of full-time employment as there was no change in the number of part-time jobs.

The services sector saw 22,800 new jobs while the goods-producing sector added 4,900 ones.

Year-over-year average hourly wage growth for all employees was 2.8 percent in May, up from 2.5 percent in April.

Compared with May 2018, the Canadian economy added 453,100 jobs, namely 299,000 full-time positions and 154,100 part-time jobs.
