Tunisia elected non-permanent member of UN Security Council

TUNIS, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia was elected on Friday as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the period 2020-2021, said a statement released by the Tunisian government.

As the only candidate for a non-permanent seat in the UNSC in the North African region, Tunisia was elected with 191 votes out of 193, according to the statement.

"During its membership on the UNSC, Tunisia will support collective action in order to promote peace and security, achieve well-being and sustainable development for the peoples of the world and build bridges of trust, dialogue, solidarity and cooperation between all member states," it said.

"The main priorities of Tunisia in the security council will be to prevent conflicts and strengthen the council's commitment to finding peaceful settlements for existing disputes," the statement added.

The UNSC is composed of 15 members, namely five permanent ones of China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States, and 10 non-permanent ones elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.

It is Tunisia's fourth time to be elected as a non-permnent member of the UNSC.
