BRUSSELS, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) has selected eight sites for supercomputing centers in eight different member states to host the new high-performance computing machines, said the pan-European body in a press release recently.

Chosen by the European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC), the hosting sites will be located in Sofia (Bulgaria), Ostrava (the Czech Republic), Kajaani (Finland), Bologna (Italy), Bissen (Luxembourg), Minho (Portugal), Maribor (Slovenia), and Barcelona (Spain), said the press release published Friday.

"They will support the development of major applications in domains such as personalized medicine, drug and material design, bio-engineering, weather forecasting, and climate change," read the press release.

Proposed by the Commission and supported by the Council of the EU, the EuroHPC was established in November 2018 with the aim of equipping the EU with a world-class supercomputing infrastructure by the end of 2020.

The EU planned to invest 1 billion euros (1.19 billion U.S. dollars) in member states to carry out the initiative, which will operate from 2019 to the end of 2026.
