MAPUTO, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique's main opposition party Renamo submitted on Monday in Maputo its registration to participate in the general elections scheduled in October this year, for the elections of president, members of parliament and for the first-time provincial governors.

The application was submitted to the National Election Commission by Renamo's envoy Venancio Mondlane, who said the party goes to the process with confidence.

"We submitted our application very confidently, reinforced from the political party we have been developing particular after the municipal elections, so we are eager for the electoral campaign to begin," said Mondlane.

One of the elements reinforcing the former rebel movement's expectation for the coming elections is the new electoral model which the envoy said will strengthen and consolidate the country's democracy process.

"The model is all about the decentralization fight that characterizes Renamo party, so we are prepared because it was for this model that Renamo fought for its materialization," said Mondlane.

The party said it has strategies in place that will allow it to monitor the elections process, with the support from research institutions and training sessions provided to its delegates that will be placed during the monitoring process.

The submission was made a week after the ruling party Frelimo submitted its candidacy when it reaffirmed its intentions to support the current President Filipe Nyusi for reelection.
