ATHENS, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Six people lost their lives as a boat carrying refugees capsized off the coast of Lesvos island in the Aegean Sea on Tuesday, the Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

Two minors were among the victims, according to preliminary information.

The Greek Coast Guard has rescued 58 refugees and migrants and the nationalities of the victims and survivors have not been determined yet.

Hundreds of people have perished in the Aegean since 2015 when thousands of refugees and migrants started risking their lives to cross from Turkey into Europe, seeking refuge from warzones and extreme poverty.

More than one million people reached Greece to continue their journey to other European countries until the closure of borders in 2016. Half of them landed on Lesvos' shores.
