WINDHOEK, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's 37 MW Hardap Solar PV plant, located in the southern parts of the country, is forecast to deliver approximately 5 percent of the annual energy demand, according to an official.
Namibia's power utility, NamPower's spokesperson, Gladwin Groenewaldt said in an interview with Xinhua on Wednesday that the solar plant which is the country's largest plant will be officially inaugurated on June 20 by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo.
"Prior to its construction, there were several 5 MW PV plants erected under the ReFIT program and at the moment there are two 10MW GreeNam PV projects installed near Mariental and Keetmanshoop respectively," he said.
Groenewaldt said the plant will assist in the reduction of electricity imports, with the goal to make the country self-sufficient and ensure the security of supply. However, it should be noted that its supply remains intermittent.
The construction activities on site commenced in April 2018.
Currently, the plant is connected to the Namibian Grid at the Hardap substation, in the southern parts of the country.
