LONDON, June 12 (Xinhua) -- A new bid by opposition politicians to stop Theresa May's successor from taking Britain out of the European Union (EU) was launched Wednesday in the House of Commons.

Led by the main opposition Labour Party, a cross-party motion is calling for MPs to take control of the House of Commons on June 25 to introduce legislation to avoid a no-deal scenario on Oct. 31, the deadline for Britain to leave the EU.

The move comes after a number of politicians bidding to succeed Theresa May as prime minister said Britain would leave the EU with or without a deal on Oct. 31.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has won backing from other opposition parties, including the Liberal Democrats, Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru, the Party of Wales, and the Greens. It is also being backed by a number of rebel MPs from the Conservative benches.

Usually the government controls business in the House of Commons, but there is a rarely used process enabling MPs to seize control of the business agenda to force debates.

Labour's Shadow Brexit minister Jenny Chapman said tonight's vote was a safety valve aimed at Conservative leadership candidates trying to cut MPs out of the Brexit decision.

The first hurdle will come later on Wednesday night when Corbyn seeks to win approval in the House of Commons for the measure to pave the way for a major debate on June 25.
