OSLO, June 12 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Wednesday that deepening mutual understanding and trust is needed in the peace process on the Korean Peninsula even as "talks appear in a stalemate" during his three-day state visit to Norway.
Addressing the Oslo Forum at the University of Oslo, Moon noted that the day marks the first anniversary of the first summit in Singapore between the leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States.
"Talks appear in a stalemate since the second DPRK-United States summit, but that is because we need some time to understand each other thoroughly," Moon said. "It is the process of thawing out hostile feelings that have persisted for the last 70 years."
"What we need now is not a new vision or proclamation, but the deepening of mutual understanding and trust. With this as a foundation, we have to strengthen the will for dialogue further," he said.
Moon also referred to the "positive peace" concept formulated by Johan Galtung, Norwegian sociologist and the principal founder of the discipline of peace and conflict studies.
According to Galtung, negative peace is a simple absence of direct violence, whereas positive peace seeks out and resolves structural causes of conflict, Moon said.
He also called for a peace that "contributes to resolving disputes and conflicts between neighboring countries."
