Gunmen kill 3 security operatives in Nigeria's oil-rich state

ABUJA, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A soldier and two personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were killed by suspected gunmen in the country's oil-rich Rivers State, the army confirmed on Monday.

The gunmen, suspected to be oil thieves, shot dead the security operatives and took away their weapons on Sunday, army spokesman Col. Aminu Iliyasu said in a statement reaching Xinhua in Abuja.

The security operatives were deployed to be on guard in Gio community of Tai area in Rivers, preventing oil thieves or rebels from vandalizing the oil and gas facility situated there.

Iliyasu said the army had re-deployed more troops to the area with the intent to apprehend the fleeing gunmen as well as other criminals in the community.
