DAR ES SALAAM, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian authorities said on Monday the number of people killed by a new outbreak of cholera in the east African nation has risen from three to six.
Faustine Ndugulile, the Deputy Minister for Health, said 6 people have died from cholera in different parts of the country, with 316 others diagnosed with the disease.
"The public should take necessary precautions to improve hygiene in their homes in order to help the government's efforts to control the disease," he told a news conference in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
On May 29, Tanzanian Minister for Health Ummy Mwalimu said one person had been killed by cholera in Dar es Salaam with 32 others admitted to various health centers in the capital.
"The outbreak of the disease is caused by failure to abide with hygienic regulations," said the minister.
She directed all municipal councils in the commercial capital to enact by-laws that imposed stern punishments to people who emptied cesspool tanks in the open when it rained.
