MADRID, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Spanish state television network, RTVE, has become the first TV network in the country to make a connection to a reporter using 5G technology.

The connection took place during the network's Wednesday lunchtime news, when the presenter Ana Blanco spoke to the reporter Carlos de la Morena, who was live in the city of Valencia (eastern Spain), where the EuCNC 2019, Global 5G event is being held until June 21.

De la Morena made his broadcast from in front of a TV screen which helped highlight the superfast speed on the new 5G network, which virtually eliminates latency -- the time it takes for data to be sent and received.

June 15th saw Spain become one of the first European nations to open up a commercial 5G network with 5G becoming available in 15 Spanish cities, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

The majority of network infrastructure to allow the commercial 5G rollout in Spain has been provided by the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, with some collaboration from Ericsson.

5G offers many advantages over the current 4G networks, including much higher download and upload speeds, greater network density, which means far greater numbers of people can be connected to the network at the same time, and low latency -- all of which helped make Wednesday's historic broadcast possible.
