ALGIERS, June 20 (Xinhua) -- Algeria has sent military aircraft carrying humanitarian aid to the flood-hit Libyan city of Ghat, official Algeria Press Service (APS) reported Thursday.

Four of the military planes reached the southernmost locality of Djanet in Illizi Province near the Libyan borders, with the aid to be transported by road to Ghat on Friday, APS said.

The aid includes 77 tons of 2,000 food parcels, 18 tons of mineral water, medicines, 2,000 mattresses and blankets, two generators, 16 hydraulic pumps and tents.

Aissa Boulahia, governor of Illizi, said in statements to reporters that the army and the Interior Ministry ordered quick delivery of the relief aid following calls for help from the stricken residents in the border region.

Ghat and its surrounding areas were hit in the past few days by heavy rainfall which caused sweeping floods and forced more than 5,000 to leave their homes.

Surrounding areas in Algeria, Niger, Mali and Nigeria were also affected by floods.
