ADDIS ABABA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed when a bus overturned in Somali regional state, in eastern Ethiopia, a government official said on Friday.

Twenty-three others aboard the bus were seriously injured, said the state's Chief Traffic Police Inspector Ahmed Nur, according to state-affiliated media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate.

Police said speeding caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Although Ethiopia has one of the lowest per capita car ownership rates in the world, deadly traffic accidents are fairly common, with the blame put on bad roads, reckless driving, a flawed driving license issuance system, and lax enforcement of safety rules.

In the year to July 7, 2018, road accidents killed 5,118 people in Ethiopia, according to the country's Federal Transport Authority.
