TRIPOLI, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Forces of Libya's UN-backed government on Friday said it launched 10 airstrikes on positions of the eastern-based army in south of the capital Tripoli.

According to the spokesman of the government forces, Mohamed Gonono, the air force launched 10 airstrikes in southern Tripoli, as well as the city of Gharian, some 80 km south of Tripoli.

The government forces on Thursday announced launching eight airstrikes on the army near Tripoli, and also targeting a convoy of the army carrying ammunitions to head to Tripoli.

The army, led by General Khalifa Haftar, has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli, where the government is based.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the fighting so far killed 691 people and injured 4,012 others.

The army is allied with the eastern-based government, as the north African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments.
