Lightning, thunderstorm kill 31 in India's Bihar

NEW DELHI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- At least 31 people were killed and 11 others injured due to lightning and thunderstorm in eastern Indian state of Bihar, the state-run broadcaster - All India Radio (AIR) said Thursday.

The deaths took place over the past 24 hours.

"In Bihar, thunderstorm and lightning have claimed 31 lives from different parts of the state during the past 24 hours," the broadcaster said. "Maximum 14 deaths were reported from Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Muzaffarpur districts. 11 people were also injured in the incident."

According to the broadcaster, the local government has announced a monetary relief for each family that lost member in the thunderstorms and lightning.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has also ordered health officials to provide free treatment to the injured in these incidents.

Meanwhile, the meteorological department has forecast more thunderstorms in the next 24 hours across the state.

In Uttar Pradesh, 17 people were killed and 19 others injured in rain-related incidents in this week.
