KAMPALA, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's double Commonwealth Games gold medalist Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei will take part in the 2019 IAAF Eugene Diamond League in Oregon, the United States.

Cheptegei told Xinhua in an interview on Friday that he prepared well for the 2-mile race.

"These races present a good opportunity for me to keep preparing for the World Championship later this year," added Cheptegei.

He will face tough competition from the likes of Ehiopia's Hagos Gerbhiwet and Canada's Ahmed Mohammed.

Cheptegei started the season in style with by winning a gold medal at the 2019 World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark in March.

However, in May, he did not perform well in the Shanghai Diamond League.

"My body is responding well and that is very important for an athlete," he added.

Uganda female athletes Winnie Nanyondo and Peruth Chemutai will also take part in the 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase race respectively.

"We are always happy to see our athletes take part in these International meets because they are gaining more exposure. Most of the medals Uganda continues to win is because of good exposure at the international stage," said Dominic Otuchet, president of the Uganda Athletics Federation.
