Number of new postdoctoral lecturers in Germany decreased in 2018

BERLIN, July 3 (Xinhua) -- With a decline of 4 percent compared to the previous year, 1,529 scientists successfully completed their postdoctoral lecturing qualification at universities in Germany in 2018, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced on Wednesday.

The postdoctoral lecturing qualification is the highest university distinction in some european countries including Germany, and is the official qualification in order to teach at universities.

At the same time, however, the number of women among new postdoctoral lecturers increased by 4 percent to 483 and the share of women with university teaching qualifications climbed to 32 percent. According to Destatis, the share of women had only been 23 percent 10 years ago.

The average age of post-doctoral graduates in 2018 in Germany was just under 42.

More than half of all new postdoctoral lecturers in Germany were from human medicine and health sciences subjects, followed by mathematics, natural sciences and the humanities where the share of women was highest with 44 percent.

In 2018, 154 international scientists successfully obtained the qualification for university lecturer in Germany. The share of non-Germans was 10 percent and somewhat lower than the 11 percent in the previous year.
