Nigerians hails Super Eagles win over Cameroon at AFCON

LAGOS, July 7 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and other football fans across the Nigeria have hailed the country's national team win over their Cameroonian counterpart at the ongoing 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Super Eagles on Saturday defeated their Indomitable Lions counterpart 3-2 in a thrilling round of 16 match in Alexandria, Egypt to qualify for the quarter-finals stage.

Buhari in a tweet on his official Twitter handle hailed the team for its display of hard work, team spirit and sportsmanship.

He also assured the team of his full support on its quest for glory in Egypt.

Also, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar praised the Super Eagles for its resilience and show of quality, adding that he was proud of the team.

On his part, Mutiu Adepoju, ex international, hailed Super Eagles win over Cameroon at the 2019 AFCON with a call on the team to be more cohesive in their next matches.

Adepoju, who commended the hard fought win, however, said the team still needed to improve in all aspects to go far in the competition.

He stressed the need for the team to be more cohesive and avoid loss of concentration throughout the full 90 minutes.

The former Super Eagles midfielder called for a mass attack and mass defense approach in the quarter-finals match, with players of the team helping each other on and off the ball.

Speaking in the same vein, a former FIFA/CAF Instructor, Adegboye Onigbinde congratulated the Super Eagles for securing quarter-final ticket in the ongoing AFCON.

The Nigerian team will now meet Bafana Bafana of South Africa in Wednesday's quarter-finals.
