SOFIA, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian authorities have arrested a 20-year-old Bulgarian citizen suspected of hacking the National Revenue Agency (NRA), the country's Prosecutor's Office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The suspect, named with the initials K. B., was arrested on Tuesday, and was charged with illegal copying of computer data from a NRA server from an unspecified date to July 15, 2019, the statement said.

The criminal act was of considerable importance and was committed against an information system that is part of the country's critical infrastructure, the statement said, adding that if found guilty, the suspect may spend five to eight years behind bars.

According to the statement, K. B. was an employee of a company based in Sofia. He was a cyber security expert and was involved in testing and auditing of information systems, the statement said.

However, according to the statement, the activities of K. B. against the NRA "have no connection with the business of the company in which he works."

The investigation is ongoing.

On Tuesday before noon, Rossen Bachvarov, head of NRA's Communication Directorate, said at a press conference that unknown hackers have illegally penetrated the agency's network and gained access to about 3 percent of the information contained there.
