MEXICO CITY, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Wednesday that he will meet with a delegation of U.S. lawmakers on Friday to discuss the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), and he will promote its approval.
"My position will be that we are in favor of giving the final approval to the treaty," Lopez Obrador told reporters, stressing its importance to the region.
On June 19, Mexico became the first of the three countries to approve the USMCA. The trade deal must pass the U.S. and Canadian legislatures before coming into effect.
Lopez Obrador said that the previous commercial agreement consolidated an economic-financial relationship in North America that "can not be missed," and insisted on the importance of the new deal.
He also announced that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will meet Sunday with Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Marcelo Ebrard.
