Russian FM in Cuba to meet local leaders

HAVANA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived Tuesday night in Havana on an official visit to meet with main Cuban authorities, including his counterpart Bruno Rodriguez.

In Havana, the Russian senior official plans to address a wide range of current global and regional problems, according to a statement from the Russian government.

The foreign ministers from both sides will also discuss several affairs of bilateral interest, including commerce, economy, culture and humanitarian relations.

Lavrov arrives in Cuba as part of a tour that will also take him to Brazil and Suriname.

Before travelling to the Caribbean island, Lavrov stressed to Russia Today the relevance of the processes ongoing in Cuba, such as the enacted new Constitution and the reforms.

Russia and Cuba are old allies from the Cold War era.

Both nations cooperate closely on key sectors like tourism, rail transport, telecommunications and power generation.

Moscow and Havana also share common views towards many international issues.
