SUVA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- In order to achieve the reduction of 2.5 million tons of carbon-dioxide over the next five years, Fiji needs to plant more trees, a Fijian official said on Thursday.
Speaking at the REDD+ (reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries) Environmental Stewardship Inter-Faith Based Organization Leaders Awareness Forum at the Pacific Regional Seminary in Suva, capital of Fiji on Thursday, Fiji’s Permanent Secretary for Forests Pene Baleinabuli said that Fiji's aim is to plant four million trees in four years, Fiji wants to make sure that this initiative is taken on and made a constant part of their daily lives.
Part of the four millions trees plan is to get the communities involved and actively engage with them, he said.
Baleinabuli urged Fijians to plant trees to remember a memorable event such as birthdays, funerals, graduations and other important events and contribute in the four million trees planting initiative.
The trees that will be planted in the REDD+ initiative will consist of mahogany, pine, fruit trees and other varieties of trees to save Fiji's mountains and environment as Fiji has been fighting climate change for decades.
