TRIPOLI, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed government on Sunday denounced the deadly shelling of a field hospital south of the capital Tripoli, which killed five doctors and paramedics and injured eight other medical workers on Saturday.

"The Presidential Council of the Government of National Accord condemns in the strongest terms the targeting of civilian installations by the aggressor forces," the government said in a statement.

The concerned authorities of the government of national accord were monitoring and documenting the crimes in order to bring those responsible to justice, said the statement.

The east-based rebel army has been leading a military campaign since early April to take over Tripoli from the UN-backed government.

The fighting so far has killed more than 1,000 people, injured more than 5,700 others, and forced more than 120,000 people to flee their homes, according to the World Health Organization.

Libya has been mired in chaos and instability ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
