Small plane crashes in Finland, pilot killed

HELSINKI, July 29 (Xinhua) -- A private aircraft crashed in central Finland late Sunday and the pilot was killed, Finnish media reported on Monday.

Rescue services were called to start search as the plane had not arrived in Oulu in line with its flight plan.

Initially after the crash, the whereabouts of the aircraft was not known, but the pilot's mobile phone was still operating and the rescuers could pin down the plane to a marshland area.

There were no other people on the plane.

Locals told newspaper Kaleva they had seen an aircraft that was losing altitude and seemed to have engine problems. Rescue service told the paper the pilot had attempted an emergency landing on a field in the marshland.

The aircraft was of a Monnet Sonerail IIL. The type was defined as a hobbyist construction aircraft, national broadcaster Yle reported.
