SYDNEY, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Owners of units in Australia's now infamous Opal Tower in Western Sydney, have launched a class action lawsuit against the New South Wales State Government, media outlets reported on Tuesday.
The group are seeking millions of dollars worth of compensation after being forced to evacuate the building on Christmas Eve 2018 when large cracks appeared in the structure, with hundreds of families still in temporary accommodation.
A lawsuit claiming "breach of warranty" was filed late on Friday, targeting state government funded body, the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) who owns the land where Opal Tower stands, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
State Premier Gladys Berejiklian told reporters on Tuesday that while not fully aware of the lawsuit, she understands those owners taking legal action to defend their rights.
"This is an unfortunate set of circumstances. We inherited the system we have today and we're aiming to fix it by the end of the year through legislation," Berejiklian said.
She said that the government is planning to announce a new building commissioner soon to review Sydney's troubled construction regulatory system.
"(The commissioner) will ensure moving forward and that everybody in the industry not only aware of their responsibilities, but deliver on those responsibilities," she said.
