NEW DELHI, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday congratulated Muslim women over the passage of a legislation banning and criminalising the Triple Talaq (triple divorce) in the parliament.

The bill passed by the parliament now needs to be signed by the Indian president before it turns into a law.

Among the Muslim community there has been an ill-practice wherein men divorced their wives by simply uttering the word divorce thrice. In some cases such divorces took place even through text messages or WhatsApp messages on phone on trivial issues.

The legislation provides for legal action against men divorcing their wives by uttering "divorce" thrice.

A section of Indian women and activists in the society had been vociferously demanding abolition of this social evil.

Modi said that henceforth the Muslim women will not suffer from the ill-practice of triple divorce as it has been thrown to the trash bin.

"This is an occasion to salute the remarkable courage of those Muslim women who have suffered great wrongs just due to the practice of Triple Talaq," tweeted Modi after the passage of the legislation in both the Houses of Indian parliament on Tuesday.

In his successive second tweet, Modi added: "The abolition of Triple Talaq will contribute to women empowerment and give women the dignity they deserve in our society."
