JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The South African Police Service and Johannesburg Metro Police Department clashed with protesters in Johannesburg CBD on Thursday afternoon.
Local media reported that police in the CBD were confiscating items from hawkers operating illegally and are being met by retaliation from vendors.
Protesters blocked Raheema Moosa Street and throw stones at the police who retaliated by firing rubber bullets.
Three metro police vehicles were damaged in the chaos.
The police said the reason for the protest is still unknown and no injuries or arrests have been reported as yet.
