BANGKOK, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The United States has formally withdrawn from Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty with Russia, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday on his twitter.

"U.S. gave Russia six months to return to compliance with the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Russia refused, so the treaty ends today," he twitted while in Bangkok attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) foreign ministers' meeting and related meetings.

He added that the United States will not remain party to a treaty when others violate it.

Meanwhile, Russia also confirmed the termination of the treaty at the initiative of the U.S side.
