NEW DELHI, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- India's top court said on Friday hearing in Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi land dispute case in Ayodhya, a city in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, will begin on a day-to-day basis from next week, officials said.

The supreme court said the mediation panel set up to amicably resolve the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi Ayodhya land dispute had failed and daily hearings in the case would begin on Aug. 6.

"Mediation didn't result in any kind of settlement," said Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

Earlier, the apex court asked the mediation panel to submit the status report on the mediation process by Wednesday.

The demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992 triggered countrywide communal riots between Hindus and Muslims and claimed over 2,000 lives, mostly of Muslims.

Many Hindus believe that the mosque was built over the birthplace of Hindu god -- Lord Ram.

The supreme court has been hearing the petition on the dispute to decide to whom the site belongs.
