VIENTIANE, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Xieng Khuang provincial authorities in Laos plan to install more facilities at the Plain of Jars to make the area more visitor friendly, in anticipation of a tourist influx following its listing as a World Heritage Site this year.

During a press conference on the official celebration of the Plain of Jars' listing as a World Heritage Site, provincial governor Bountone Chanthaphone said the province will continue to improve infrastructure, especially roads, to ensure the safety of visitors, local daily Vientiane Times reported on Monday.

Provincial authorities will also seek investment by domestic and foreign companies to build hotels and guesthouses as well as restaurants and entertainment venues. The authorities will encourage local residents to grow organic vegetables for sale to local markets, hotels, and restaurants so that visitors can enjoy good fresh food.

The Plain of Jars is popular with tourists and is the most well-known destination in Xieng Khuang province, some 180 km northeast of Vientiane.

Visitors can also take trips to hot springs, caves and old temples there.

The province has 18 hotels, 125 resorts and guesthouses, 124 restaurants and 10 entertainment venues. More than 144,000 visitors visited Xieng Khuang in 2018, according to the Tourism Development Department, Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.
