4 pct food samples in BiH found not complying with applicable regulations in 2018

SARAJEVO, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Food Safety Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has processed a total of 85,601 food samples in 2018, of which 4,007 or 4.68 percent did not comply with applicable regulations, BiH's Council of Ministers stated in a report following a session on Monday.

The most number of food samples were tested for microbiological parameters, a total of 66,035, out of which 794 or 1.2 percent did not comply with applicable regulations, mainly meat of cattle, poultry and venison, and sugar.

When it comes to drinking water samples, a total of 14,788 were analyzed in 2018, of which 3,108 or 21.02 percent did not comply with regulations.

Last year, food was the cause of illness for 820 people who had salmonella infection, usually caused by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs or egg products. People were also reported having foodborne intoxication, caused by the ingestion of food containing live bacteria which grow and establish themselves in the human intestinal tract.
