YANGON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities dismissed a report of an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in Yangon, according to the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) Wednesday.
"The virus has not reached Yangon. It is a false alarm. No ASF infection has been reported in Myanmar," said U Min Aung, head of the YCDC Veterinary and Slaughter House Department, adding that preventive and precautionary measures are being undertaken.
The department has urged people to avoid importing frozen pigs and consuming pork products such as bacon, ham and sausage and also, to prevent hunting and farming of boars and domestic pigs.
The department called on the people to report any suspicious signs at the pig farms to the authorities and cooperate in carrying out the preventive measures.
The ASF virus is easily spread between pigs, with a high mortality in pig farms.
Meanwhile, 87 people have died of seasonal influenza A (H1N1) in Myanmar till Aug. 3, with a highest mortality number of 63 registered in Yangon.
