KAMPALA, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan government on Wednesday announced a one-month verification and validation exercise of all non-government organizations (NGOs) in the east African country.

Jeje Odongo, minister of internal affairs in a statement said some NGOs have been operating illegally since there has not been any verification or validation exercise for the last 30 years.

The statement said all NGOs in the country have up to September 7 to hand in their documents for verification and validation.

According to the National NGO register, as of July 31, 2019, there were 14,207 registered NGOs, out of which 3,810 had valid permits, while 10,397 others had expired ones.

The ministry urged all NGOs with expired permits to apply for renewal and validation while those that have never been registered should do so before the deadline expires.

Odongo noted that after the deadline, no NGO without valid papers would be allowed to operate in the country.
