MUMBAI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Parts of western India, including Mahabaleshwar and Tamhini Ghats, received record rainfall over the past week, during which 16 people were killed and 140,000 people in five districts of the western state of Maharashtra were evacuated.
According to officials in India Meteorological Department, Tamhini Ghats recorded 5,939 mm of rainfall while Mahabaleshwar recorded 5,755 mm of rainfall from June 1 to Aug. 6.
Trucks were stuck on a national highway connecting the financial capital Mumbai to information and technology hub Bengaluru, as the road was submerged by flood water.
National Disaster Response Force along with army and navy personnel were deployed to carry out relief and rescue operations in the flood affected areas.
In June and July, 138 people have died in the state of Maharashtra in incidents of wall and building collapse, breaching of dams, landslides, floods and lightning, compared to 57 people in the same period last year, as per government data.
