WARSAW, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- reigning world champions Poland thrashed Tunisia 25-15, 25-19, 25-19 in their Pool D opening game at the FIVB Men's Olympic volleyball qualifiers in Gdansk on Friday.

Under reassuring presence of head coach Vital Heynen, a former Belgian volleyball star, the Poles hardly broke into a sweat during the encounter at the Ergo Arena.

Pool D features Poland, France, Slovenia and Tunisia.

The arena was a cauldron of noise and colour for this first game, with an attendance of 9,280 spectators.

In the second encounter of the evening, reigning European Champions France are slated to face Slovenia in their opening match.

In all, 24 teams are divided into six pools of four teams and competing in a round-robin format across the globe until Sunday.

Only the highest-placed team from each of the pools will earn a place at Tokyo 2020. As hosts, Japan has qualified automatically.

Last weekend, the Serbian woman's volleyball team celebrated a stunning victory in Wroclaw over hosts Poland to secure a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics.
