THE HAGUE, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Italian cyclist Elia Viviani became European champion on the road in Alkmaar on Sunday.
On the windy and flat roads in the province of North Holland, Viviani, Belgian Yves Lampaert and German Pascal Ackermann broke away from the peleton.
Viviani held off Lampaert in the final kilometers and beat the Belgian in the sprint to win the 172.6 kilometers with start and finish in Alkmaar. German Ackermann finished third.
"I am super happy with this victory," Viviani said afterwards. The 30-year-old Italian had won a stage in the Tour de France this year.
