SYDNEY, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Papua New Guinea (PNG)'s national carrier AIR Niugini has suspended all flights to and from Buka Airport in the autonomous region of Bougainville.
The National Newspaper reported on Wednesday that the decision was made as a result of safety and security concerns.
"People are crossing over the runway and have been damaging important airport equipment," a spokesperson for the National Airports Corporation (NAC) said.
"There has been little support from the provincial government to address this issue."
The airport was also shut down at the end of last year under similar circumstances.
With six flights per week scheduled to Buka Airport, Air Niugini said they will now divert operations to Aropa Airport in Kieta, on the other side of the island.
