ABUJA, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Three people were confirmed dead and two others still missing following a boat accident in Nigeria's commercial hub, Lagos, said a local official on Wednesday.

Two passenger boats, carrying a total of 18 people, had a head-on collision on Tuesday along the Irewe creek in the Ojo local government area of the state, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, head of the Lagos Waterways Authority, told reporters.

Emmanuel said 13 passengers were rescued by local divers. "Search and rescue operation is ongoing by relevant state agencies and the local community who were the first responders," he said.

An adult and a child have been identified as those missing following the incident.

Preliminary investigations by the authorities had revealed that the incident occurred due to reckless driving and speeding.

Emmanuel, however, said further investigations would be carried out soon to ascertain other causes of the incident.
