MAHMOUD RAQI, Afghanistan, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Seven civilians have been killed in an insurgent's mortar shelling in Afghanistan's eastern Kapisa province, local police confirmed Wednesday.
The incident happened late on Tuesday in Tagab district's Jalokhil village, where a Taliban-fired shell hit a house leaving seven members of a family dead, provincial police spokesman Abdul Shakor Shorush told Xinhua.
"All killed individuals were women and children," said the police spokesman.
Meanwhile, Zabiullah Mujahid, a purported Taliban spokesman, denied the report. He wrote on Twitter that the shell was fired by government security forces.
The Afghan civilians continue to bear the brunt of armed conflicts as more than 1,360 civilians were killed and over 2,440 others injured in conflict-related incidents in the first six months of this year, according to figures released by the UN mission in Afghanistan.
