CANBERRA, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand remained the most popular overseas destination for Australian travellers while China was the biggest source of visitors to Australia.

According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday, Australians made about 1.4 million short-term trips -- defined as less than one year in length -- to New Zealand in financial year 2018-19.

China was the biggest source country to Australia, with more than 1.4 million visitors nationally. China was also the fifth most visited country by Australians.

Indonesia was the second most popular destination for Australians, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom (UK).

"There has generally been an ongoing increase of Australian residents travelling overseas over recent decades," Jenny Dobak, the ABS Director of Migration Statistics, said in a media release.

The median duration away for Australians who travelled overseas was 15 days while that for international visitors to Australia was 11 days.

Holiday was the main reason for traveling for 57 percent of Australians followed by visiting friends and families at 26 percent.
