SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nvidia Corp. Thursday said its revenue dropped 17 percent year on year to 2.58 billion U.S. dollars for the second quarter, from 3.12 billion dollars a year ago.

But its revenue went up 16 percent from 2.22 billion dollars in the previous quarter, the U.S. graphic chip maker said in a report of its financial results for the three-months period ending on July 28, 2019.

Its earning per diluted share for the quarter, calculated on a generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) basis, was 0.90 dollar, up 41 percent form the previous quarter's 0.64 dollar, but down 49 percent on a year-on-year basis, said the company based in Santa Clara, North California.

Nvidia's revenue from the gaming segment, its largest business unit, generated 1.31 billion dollars for the second quarter, down 27 percent on a year-on-year basis.

It's data-center business also posted a 13.8 percent year-on-year reduction in revenue for the quarter, generating 655 million dollars, lower than market estimates of 688.5 million dollars.

Nvidia reported quarterly gains in many sectors, including net income that rose 40 percent from last quarter's 394 million dollars to 552 million dollars in the May-July period.

"We achieved sequential growth across our platforms," said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. "Real-time ray tracing is the most important graphics innovation in a decade."

The sequential increase reflected the company's growth from system-on-chip modules for gaming platforms, gaming notebook graphics processing units (GPUs), and GeForce RTX Super gaming GPUs.

Nvidia provided its outlook for its third fiscal quarter, with revenue expected to reach 2.9 billion dollars, plus or minus 2 percent.
