TRIPOLI, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Spokesman of Libya's east-based army, Ahmad al-Mismari, on Friday said that the army's air force had targeted the airport of the western city of Zuwara, some 120 km west of the capital Tripoli, and destroyed a hanger used to store drones.

"The Libyan Arab air force on Friday August 16 attacked again the Zuwara airport and destroyed a hanger used to store Turkish-made drones," the spokesman said in a statement.

The army also attacked hangers used to store drones and ammunition in the nearby town of Abu kammash, the spokesman added.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) on Thursday denounced increasing attacks on civilian airports in western Libya.

"The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) deplores the ever-increasing and systemic attacks on airports in western Libya, including Zuwara and Mitiga. These attacks have endangered the lives of thousands of civilian travelers, including UN staff and humanitarian workers," the Mission said in a statement.

The UN-backed government of Libya has been engaged in a deadly armed conflict since early April in and around the capital Tripoli against the east-based army, which is trying to take over the city and overthrow the government.

The Mission said that the capital's only functioning airport was attacked on Thursday by indiscriminate shelling, killing a workers and injuring another, and also causing material damage and disrupting flights.

The army is allied with the eastern-based government, as the north African nation is politically divided between eastern and western governments.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
