BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The 10th Asian Junior Wushu Championships kicked off to a colorful opening ceremony on Monday here in Brunei.

The opening ceremony at the National Indoor Stadium, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, was attended by 398 athletes and officials from 16 countries and regions.

The host country Brunei is represented by seven males and six females aged from seven to 16 years old. China sent a delegation of 13 junior athletes.

This is the first time that Brunei has hosted such a big Wushu event. This year, the Asian Junior Wushu Championships has been organized by the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam with the support of the Brunei Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The chairman of the Executive Committee of the tournament, Mohd Firdaus, said in his opening speech that he hoped all the young participating Wushu athletes will exhibit sportsmanship and friendship throughout the championships.

"I hope that during the championships, participating countries and regions can establish open and friendly relationships with one another, further strengthening our cultural ties," he added.

The championships features two disciplines of Taolu (forms) and Sanda (sparring), and there are more than 70 gold medals on offer before it concludes on Friday.
