COPENHAGEN, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- A fine of 50,000 DKK (approximately 7,500 U.S. dollars) has been issued to the insurance company Vendsyssel for calling up seven people on the Robinson List.

The Robinson List is a list provided by the government where citizens can sign up or unsubscribe online from direct marketing. The list protects consumers from unwanted sales calls.

"It has been illegal to make telemarketing calls in Denmark since the 1970s, though insurance companies have an exemption," Frederik Lars von Bulow, a lawyer at the Consumer Ombudsman, told Xinhua on Wednesday.

"Still, it is the insurance companies' obligation, by law, to check the list before making their telemarketing calls to avoid contacting protected numbers," he added.

Last year, the Consumer Ombudsman received 440 complaints about unwanted calls.
