NEW DELHI, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- India's northeastern state of Assam on Saturday released the updated and final list of National Register of Citizens (NRC), excluding over 1.9 million people living in the state from the list.

The NRC list contains names of over 30 million people.

According to the NRC State Coordinator's office, the status of both inclusion and exclusion can be viewed online on the NRC website www.nrcassam.nic.in.

"A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in final NRC, leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not submit their claims. Those not satisfied with outcome can file appeal before Foreigners Tribunals," said NRC state coordinator Prateek Hajela.

The process of NRC was started in the state as per an order of the Supreme Court in 2013. Since then the apex court has been closely monitoring the entire process.

As per the court order, a raft NRC was published on July 30 last year wherein around 21 million people were found eligible for inclusion. Thereafter, claims were received from around 3.6 million people against their exclusion.

The entire exercise of making the NRC list is to identify the genuine citizens living in the state and those illegally staying, particularly those who illegally migrated into the state from neighboring countries.
