BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Brunei government has consolidated all the country's telecommunication infrastructures under the management of a new government-owned wholesale network operator Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN).

All the existing telecom operators in the country, which are also all government-linked companies, will have equal access to the infrastructure and will now focus on more competitive retail operations in a more level playing field.

There are four telecommunications companies in Brunei, three of which - Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru), Datastream Technology Sdn Bhd (DST), Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (Progresif) - are services providers with their respective infrastructure. The fourth, Brunei International Gateway Sdn Bhd, handles the cable systems of the country.

Following a ceremony to signify the transfer of Telbru's infrastructure assets on Tuesday, UNN has now taken over all network infrastructure in Brunei.

UNN's CEO Steffen Oehler told local media that UNN will invest significantly towards modernizing telecommunication infrastructure in the country, including building more towers for better network coverage and plans for 5G-capable network.
