MADRID, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- A drug plantation in the town of Igualada in northern Spain has been discovered by police after being shown live on Spanish national television during the eighth stage of the Vuelta de Espana cycle race.

The Catalan regional police force 'Mossos d'Esquadra' seized around 40 marijuana plants which were being grown on a rooftop terrace on an apartment block in the town.

The rooftop marijuana was next to the finishing straight for Saturday's eighth stage of the three week-long race. Helicopter footage of the final sprint finish to the day's racing included a perfect view of the plantation.

Sharp-eyed cycling fans posted photos of the plantation on social media and alerted the Mossos d'Esquadra.

"We received information via social media that there was a marijuana plantation on the roof of a block of flats in Igualada," explained a police spokesperson, adding they had "began an investigation, which is still under way, and we have seized 40 plants. For the moment, there have been no arrests."
