ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde on Saturday expressed condolences over the passing of Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe.
"It is with a heavy heart that I write this letter, expressing the feeling of deep sadness on the Ethiopian people over the passing away of the great Pan-Africanist and liberation fighter of our continent Robert Gabriel Mugabe, former President of the Republic of Zimbabwe," Zewde said in a statement issued Saturday.
The Ethiopian president also conveyed her deep condolences to Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa over the passing of the country's former long-serving president, who passed away on Friday at the age of 95 in Singapore where he had been receiving treatment since April.
Zewde also assured that "Ethiopia joins in sympathy with the people and Government of the Republic of Zimbabwe and particularly with the bereaved family during this difficult time."
The late Mugabe started active politics in the 1960s when he founded the Zimbabwe African National Union in 1963 to fight colonial rule.
After Zimbabwe's independence in 1980, Mugabe became the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe until 1987 when he assumed the post of President of Zimbabwe, a position he held until he was ousted from power in 2017.
