TRIPOLI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Forces of Libya's UN-backed government on Saturday announced "a significant progress" in southern Tripoli against the rival eastern-based army, as the armed conflict between the two parties continues.
"Our forces managed to progress in more than one axis and reinforce their positions in southern Tripoli," the UN-backed government forces said in a statement.
"A number of military vehicles were destroyed, and a number of the criminal elements (eastern-based army) have been captured," the statement said.
The UN-backed government of Libya has been engaged in a deadly armed conflict since early April in and around Tripoli against the eastern-based army, which is trying to take over the city and overthrow the government.
